What are drugs? Drugs are chemical substances that can change how your body and mind work. They include prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs. •Types of Drugs In general, drugs have three distinct effects on the nervous system. 1. STIMULANTS literally speed up the body. Major stimulants: amphetamines and cocaine Minor stimulants: nicotine, caffeine 2. DEPRESSANTS slow down the body's functioning and induce a feeling of passive support. Alcohol Opiates: heroin, morphine, methadone Tranquilizers: anxiety pills Hypnotics: sleeping pills 3.
